This performance defines the Basie sound. It is one of contrast: the soft-cruising sound of Basie with a walking bass and brushes on the drums that explodes into full-precision tutti ensemble. The Basie band was known for exciting tutti and shout-chorus ensemble playing juxtaposed with brilliant solos. This was a cross between the great arrangements of the white tradition and the aggressive solo styles of the black tradition. Basie played fewer notes per minute than any other pianist, but his ability to swing could be matched by no other.
